Alright, we're working on other options for mobile users. From what I can tell this theme is kind of bleh, so we'll make something sexy for our site. :)

At the moment, the phpbbmobile theme we've installed still seems to be the best for mobile users among what is currently set up. I'm testing it with a very small screen in Safari and it looks fine ... definitely improves functionality on a small screen.

Damned newfangled tech. What was so wrong with giant CRT monitors with small screens anyway? :-B

Most phones these days are using full fledged browsers. I'm not sure it'll even be necessary for separate themes at some point.

I actually get annoyed when some sites default to a mobile presentation. I just got used to where everything was on their regular webpage, now I've got to find it all again on the mobile one? Yeesh. But as long as mobile is an option for folks, then it's all good.

The same thing annoys me too. I'll click on a site on my phone and then I'm like "where the hell is everything?".

We're looking at another theme right now that might be a lot better than what we currently have. It looks a lot a better and includes the ability to detect mobile and full forum layout.

Here is something else I would recommend to mobile users. It's a post from one of the mods over at the phpBB official site.

t_backoff wrote:You can already do this (without the need for some app). Set your notify settings in the UCP to notify on PMs. Then for each forum/topic, scroll down to the bottom and click "subscribe". On your smartphone, setup your mail application with the e-mail address for the forums. Now, when you receive new PMs or there is activity in the forums/topics, you will get an e-mail which will be delivered to your phone. A mobile style would allow you to browse the forums via your mobile web browser.

Meh I got enough crap coming in on my e-mail. I'd rather not add to it.

But a theme where I wouldn't have to switch would be nice :D

the mobile theme is just stripped down, but I switch a lot between phone and computer so it is a hassle. HOWEVER, I think it is less of a hassle than trying to pay for an existing app to install on the boards and then users paying for an existing app that works with it.

I'm looking into some things that I'll run by the staff if I get anywhere with it.

Salty,

The problem with mobile browsers on phones are that they're still considered "mobile" by their settings. FireFox, Chrome and Safari on a tablet or phone will always pull the mobile html before the primary HTML for a website (there are ways around this but on an iPhone it requires a jailbreak and on Android it requires scripting or constantly using the "request full site" function). Plus, screen size differences (hB looks AWFUL on my Nexus because I have to scroll side to side).

I've told Dan about Tapatalk and I highly recommend it just because the sheer number of people who use it (I personally don't care for it). Regardless, I've been working on a mobile hB theme this week that's a condensed version for mobile browsers and will not look so bloated without having to use the default phpBB mobile (awful) theme.

Really, I find the more annoying bit having to manually switch theme types when going from a mobile system to a full browser. Arguably though you should never "force" a user's experience from the UX design standpoint unless they accept it. Either way, I'll let him know once it is done and throw it up on github so you guys can take a look.

It makes no difference to me either way. I use lanparty on my Skyrocket II and have no issues at all using Phat. Tapatalk is fine assuming the branded version is free to install here at Phat and people have no issue buying the phone app.

As far as automatically switching between browser versions, we already have the code for that. It just needs to be installed assuming altering the core is worth the amount of people who really need this functionality.

Yeah, it is free to install on any forum - but the app is 2.99$ on Google Play. Again, I really never have cared for it but many forums I know use it and their core love it.

And it shouldn't change the core too much - what, just go into the index.php file and run a quick verification to see if a client browser is mobile or not and default override the theme to mobile? I don't see that requiring too much work (since it could all be done in javascript and query strings) unless you're creating a feature for people to "enable" in their UAC.

It's not a matter of whether or not it's a lot of work. It's whether or not it's worth adding in the first place.

It should be part of the core for phpBB by now given the prominence of mobile devices. Regardless, yeah, its arguable if that kind of forcible UX code should be added for a variety of reasons. Oh, phpBB.

There's actually a call right now for phpBB to develop their own mobile app. The devs didn't seem too keen on the idea considering how far behind they are with stuff that was announced years ago. My guess is it will go the same way the portal discussion went where they were too damn hardheaded to create a default portal system for phpBB.
