A decade ago - things we did and didn't see coming

Postby Ney » Sun Dec 16, 2012 10:01 am

Basis of this thread: list off things you saw coming back in 2002. And things you didn't.

I'll start! I never expected to see mobile phones being the dominant form of browsers on the internet. As of right now I design more sites and programs for mobile than I do for PCs. I also never expected Apple and Google to be direct competitors. Finally, I never expected to use Skype as my primary messaging tool.

Black president. I figured a woman would be president before that happened.

I never expected messageboards to virtually disappear from the net. The instant access of twitter and facebook has all but eliminated the need for messageboards. This is a slowed down social experience and I don't think people are all that interested in it now as compared to ten years ago.

You know that is true but I'm finding here that I actually appreciate a slower response sometimes. For example the impromptu Phat Chat on FB when I sent out the initial re-invite became a fast and furious chat with people missing a lot. Here it's a bit slower and people take the time to formulate a thought, an opinion, and response. In some ways that's actually nicer. *shrug*

I prefer it too and always have. That's why I'm still not on twitter or facebook and probably never will be. Another thing facebook and twitter killed was people using messaging programs. I never thought I'd see the day where nobody used instant messenger programs as the main way to communicate.

I also never expected to play MMO's. I had some pretty strong feelings about them in the past but once I got locked in one it became a pretty major timesink.

Twitter....pfft.....shit I just started texting about two months ago if that....I'm in no hurry to catch up technology wise. I've always known enough to get by, some of it does come natural, but I also don't want to be some old guy who 40 yrs from now can't figure out how to do something because I didn't keep up with the times.....

Technology is both good and bad......I feel bad for today's kids in a way.....some of the new gadgets that are coming out are displacing human interaction. Some of these kids nowadays are socially awkward to say the least....

A decade ago, I never thought I would be so connected to a piece of technology as I am to my IPhone. I forgot it at home last night when I went shopping and I literally felt like I forgot one of my children. I needed to update my Christmas shopping list, I needed directions, I needed to check Phat and I couldn't do any of those things!!!

A decade ago, I never thought I would own a pit bull. I never had a problem with the breed (definitely more of a problem with the owners!) but I wanted a "family dog" like a lab or golden retriever. However, now that we have him, I see that pit bulls are the ultimate family dog and I will never own another breed! Absolutely amazing dogs.

A decade ago, I never thought I would have the most education in my entire family and work as a special ed teacher. I also never thought I would be the mom to a child with special needs, but I am and it has also changed my life (obviously).

I can empathize with you there. I never thought I would've had heart surgery in 2006 just two weeks shy of my 30th birthday. That changed my outlook on life quite a bit.

Smartphones, 10 years ago, when the iPhone was coming out, I thought it was cool but never thought I would want or need it and now I will never go back to a plain cell phone again. Just got a Galaxy S3 for free and waiting for LTE service to become available in my area, they are working on that now. In fact there is a good chance I will drop my FiOS ISP and do all my internet activity through my phone's internet connection instead. Now that IS something I never thought could happen.

Ugh I can't stand Twitter and yet every one I know under the age of 50 seems to be hooked to it! I can barely stand FB anymore either and a message board is nice because I can come back to it when I have the time, and not have to refer to my phone everytime my niece makes a post on FB about One Direction... :ymsick:

I remember that. It was a pretty heavy time for you.

I also never thought I'd get hooked on MMOs for 7 years and let that addiction control my life. I also never expected to meet my s.o. on one who eventually pulled me out of that addiction.

10 years ago I never expected to get back into college. Funny enough I'm finishing up right now.

A lot of stuff has changed for you in the past 10 years. Crazy how fast time flies.

Seems the standard is that the thing most didn't see coming were the evolution of smart phones, which I agree with!

I also didn't see an Episode VII coming either!

10 years ago? I didn't know where life after school would take me. Granted I was in grade school, then when I picked up the Star Wars forums like these I was in high school. Now I have my first big boy job.

I guess I could say I didn't see me not making it to pro baseball.... :))

Agreed. Time is running fast. There are so many things to do in life and it's endless.

I find myself a completely different individual compared to what I was a decade ago.

Even the first time I landed on this forum 8 years ago, and now I'm coming back here again. :p
