My life experiences have shown me that if a god does exist, he is most certainly an asshole!

This is where I stand on the matter.

I'm a spiritualist. I believe in a higher power but I don't subscribe to religion. It's man made, inherently flawed and a big waste of time. It's also easy to use it as an excuse to act certain ways towards certain people if they don't agree.

As far as people who do believe, I respect their views. I do not look down on someone who believes in a higher power.

Make no mistake, I don't subscribe to the notion of God in the Judeo-Christian or Muslim sense. I believe in a higher plane of existence and the power that comes along with it.

The term that I have found that most accurately describes my stance is "apatheist" From Wiki (yes, I know, not an academic source, but damn useful nonetheless):

An apatheist is also someone who is not interested in accepting or denying any claims that gods exist or do not exist. In other words, an apatheist is someone who considers the question of the existence of gods as neither meaningful nor relevant to his or her life.

I would like to believe in that. But that requires blind faith, which is not logical to me

I think Scarlet has it about right when it comes to day to day life. It ultimately doesn't make one bit of difference either way.

Do I believe in God... no.

Do I believe that there might be something bigger then us? Yes if only because no one has proved to me otherwise.

From what I have seen and experienced, yes. Can you scientifically prove or disprove God? No. Do I buy into the literal scriptures? No, not all. Does that make me a heretic in some circles? Yes. Do I care? No.

For one, too many people take a literal interpretation of their religion's scriptures. Not a good thing. When I bring up Islamic terrorism, people say that is only about 1% and then try to point out atrocities committed by Christians. I see very little anymore by Christians, more by those who blame Christianity, and as to the Islamic extremism, I have to ask, what is 1% of one billion?

"The argument goes something like this: 'I refuse to prove that I exist,' says God, 'for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing.'"

That sums up my belief.

My faith has all but unraveled over the past year... but it's not completely gone. Intellectually, I've come to terms with the fact that I have absolutely no real reason to believe in the Christian god that was sold to me... Still, it's a very complicated and emotional issue for me right now.

If I have to check a box on a form or something, I supposed I'd check agnostic, but even that doesn't really fit my position. I went full on atheist a few months ago, but that didn't last. Ugh, it's complicated, but in my point of view the White Bearded Guy In The Sky Father Of Jebus dude doesn't exist.

That said, there is a lot that I have experienced in my life that I just don't understand. Perhaps it was delusional, as from my understanding the brain is a very powerful machine that can "emulate" all sorts of spiritual experiences, given the proper stimuli...

But I've had prayers answered, and I've experienced a couple of miracles of my own.

SO yeah... agnostic, spiritual, searching... atheist but not... I really don't know what words to put on where I am at as far as religion is concerned.

I cannot believe in the God I was sold, as much as I try. I cannot stop believing in something... but I can't really describe what it is.

Fuck it, just call me agnostic. I really don't know what the crap's going on. :p

Yeah, ultimately I do.

But he's not the bearded man in the sky from the bible. I view him (using masculine for convenience really) is some compilation of Aristotle's First Cause (the dude who set all of this in motion) mixed with some of what I've read in the Conversations With God books, mixed with some Buddhist beliefs and some wisdom from the Tao.

Basically, I think any imagining of God (yes, even as ridiculous as the Flying Spaghetti Monster...who I also adore btw :p) is but a small piece to a much larger "puzzle" of who god is and what his function is in our lives.

God doesn't exist. Unless God's a self-righteous, insecure fucktard who trolls humanity. Is there a higher purpose? A unifying spirit of souls? A deep connection between everything?

That exists.

Yes. Brought up Catholic, went to a Catholic Elementary/High School, though have been to church a total of less than 10 times since '92. Not a bible thumper by any means but by the same token despise atheist who try to shove their view down my throat. If you want to be an Atheist by all means do what you want, but don't go around shoving that shit in my face when I didn't ask and don't care. The same principle would apply to Christians who spout religious views to people who don't want to hear it.

I believe in living by the rule: "treat others as you would want to be treated", it's simple and to the point...

I would love to believe that something bigger is out there. Trust me. I would love to know that when my life is done, I will be reunited with my loved ones.

The mind is an incredible thing. I am not sure what to take of my experience just last night. I went outside to have a cig. I smelled my wifes perfume as I was sitting there, wind blowing, nobody else around. I sat there just to see and it lingered for an easy 5 min. What was it? I don't know. Was she there with me? (I was having a conversation not moments earier that would lead for her to come by my side. Or was it me wanting to believe something) I had never experienced that portion of her coming to me before and had never tought about it. I don't know.

But I go back to what I have known as fact. Nothing has ever been a miracle to me. Nothing bad has happened that wasn't my personal doing. I believe I have put myself in the situations that led to good things happening.
