The Music of Ep VII...and beyond

The Music of Ep VII...and beyond

Postby soxtalon » Sun Nov 04, 2012 5:14 pm

With Lucas ceding creative control, is it a lock that John Williams does the score?

And maybe at topic for the Beyond part, with Williams in his 80s is it feasible to bank on Williams scoring the saga?

Who else could handle the massive baton?

Howard Shore?
Alexandre Desplat?
Hans Zimmer?
Danny Elfman?

Kevin Kiner. His work on The Clone Wars has been great. He's demonstrated an ability to incorporate classic themes in new and unexpected ways, while expanding the canvas.

Jeremy Soule could be a good shot - he's done many of the Star Wars video game scores and you might remember him from KOTOR1/2 and Bounty Hunter's great soundtracks. Joel McNeely is another possibility (since he did Shadows of the Empire and the Young Indiana Jones stuff).

Oooh. I enjoyed a lot of the Young Indy stuff. Oganga, Giver and Taker of Life was a great example.

I agree on Jeremy Soule -- his soundtracks for the KotOR series were great -- 100% star wars but more reflective of their eras in feel... themes for Revan, Malak, the Star Forge Sith Empire, etc...

That's exciting. I think the music alone makes 50% of Star Wars, so..... we're 50% there. :p

Yep. It's beginning to sound like they're making a Star Wars movie now. B-)

I wouldn't quite say that until there is an official press release but it's looking better and better....

Ya. At this point, it seems entirely up to Williams' ability to compose and conduct the score - no easy, or sure, thing given his age. But it seems like TPTB are deferring to him, giving him every opportunity for this to happen. I imagine that if he's healthy enough, he'll see it through.

Absolutely. I hope beyond hopes that he can get 7-9. I don't hold any hope of anything more. All the spinoffs, etc. will be someone else.

I hope that at worst it becomes a collaboration wtih JW doing the majority of the themes and if need be a competent assistant fleshing it out by the time 9 rolls around...
