Another World

A Little Background

At some point after the Back To The Light tour and Made In Heaven Brian had been working on a ton of little projects. He also decided to begin making a covers album he would call Heroes which would be filled with Brian covering (not too shocking) some of his heroes growing up. This was partially inspired by his cover of Hank Marvin's FBI and Jimi Hendrix's One Rainy Wish.

The idea also was to rediscover who he was by taking that journey again so to speak. Somewhere along the journey he dropped the theme of Heroes and went back to a more introspective feel. He decided to collect some of the snippets of pieces he'd been doing over the years and create a proper album from it.

He eventually released it in 1998 and it hit #23 in the UK.

TRACKS ON THE ALBUM:

1. Space (May)
2. Business (May)
3. China Belle (May)
4. Why Don't We Try Again (May)
5. On My Way Up (May)
6. Cyborg (May)
7. The Guv'nor (May)
8. Wildernesss (May)
9. Slow Down (Larry Williams)
10. One Rainy Wish (Jimi Hendrix)
11. All The Way From Memphis (Ian Hunter)
12. Another World (May)

BONUS:
13. Hot Patootie (Whatever Happened To Saturday Night)(Richard O'Brien) (B-Side)
14. Maybe Baby (Buddy Holly/Norman Petty) (B-Side)
15. FBI (Hank Marvin/Bruce Welch/Jeff Harris/Tony Meehan) (B-Side)
16. It's Only Make Believe (Conway Twitty/Jack Nance) (B-Side)
17. My Boy (May) (Demo)
18. Marie's The Name Of His Latest Flame (Doc Pomus/Mort Shuman) (Demo)

First up? The moody intro, Space

Space

Written by: Brian May

Musicians:

Brian May - all instruments

I'm gonna make a little space
Around me
A very special place
Around me
No-one can come in

- Much like The Dark on Back To The Light a quick little intro song that went into a big number on the album. Followed by Business

- Opened Brian's portion of the Another World Tour but went into Since You've Been Gone instead of Business.

QUOTE:

“I just wanted to put that little fragment on as an introduction to the album – it’s nice to sort of tease in that way, I think. And for me, I wanted something just to set up the big heavy opening track, and just set the mood of where the album’s going.” – Brian May

LIVE

BRIAN MAY 1998 TOUR

- Also includes Since You've Been Gone

PERSONAL NOTES:
I love the way Brian dramatically opens his albums. Little teasers for the win!

NEXT? Brian rocks out on Business

Business

Hey
Oh

Hey
Don't judge me Mama
Don't tell me that I've done wrong
It's a hard business
It's a hard business
To make it on your own

Don't judge me Papa
If I can't handle the things in my head
'Cos it's a hard business
Such a hard business
Walking on the edge

I've got nothing and no-one in my life
So how can I lose again
Got my feet in muddy water
But I'm gonna find that road again
So I'll be taking care of business
'Cos I know what I'm looking for
Ooh, I've been working every hour God gives to man
But I still see the same closed door, yeah
Yeah
Ow

I've got nothing but trouble in my life
But I feel I've got a lot to give
Everyday I try to build a new world
But I've had no-one to build it with
Oh, I've been looking for a woman to share my hopes
And I know I ain't a patch on you
And I've been thinking that a woman's God's gift to man
Are you thinking the same way too?
Yeah

So don't leave me Mama
Don't make me go on alone
'Cos its a hard business
Yes it's a hard business
Oooh, oh, oh, ooh

Don't leave me Papa
When my belief in myself is gone
'Cos it's a hard business
Such a hard business, oooh, ooh
Tell me it's a hard business
Being on my own
Yeah

- Played live through the first part of the 1998 tour. Believed to have been dropped due to it's high vocal range.
- Originally a theme for a British TV show called Frank Stubbs Promotes.

QUOTES

“I’m pretty keen on the first track, ‘Business’, which is tuned down to E flat; it’s very heavy and uncompromising, just the kind of stuff I love. The idea is that life is a hard business; basically you’re on your won when it comes down to it. It’s got a little preamble, a little slice of a song called 'Space', just to set the mood and what the train of thought through the album is.” - Brian May - 1998 - Guitarist

“’Business’ started off as the theme for a TV series and all they wanted was little bits so I had little bits first, but there was a complete song, in my head. So eventually we put it all together and Cozy was a big part of that. He would come in at a certain point, after I had programmed it and sorted it all out, you know, bits of arrangement, Cozy would come in and say ‘Ah, yeah, yeah. I see what you mean.’ And he would do his thing, and then suddenly the thing would start to come to life because that’s a human thing. You can program until you’re blue in the face, you know, but you never get that sort of thing that comes from real people interacting. Cozy would always be a great energy source, and I’m gonna miss him terribly, you know. He was a bit part of most of the tracks on this album. It’s something which stirs your guts in, in a particular way, and you know, to see Cozy hit those things, you felt something, you know, it wasn’t just hitting things in time, it was like everything had a certain menace to it and a certain joy. Cozy was very up, very funny.” – Brian May

ALTERNATE VERSIONS

ORIGINAL THEME SONG

- The only thing on YT was this vid of a BUNCH of short snippet Queen rarities. I tried to line it up right.

ROCK ON COZY MIX

- For the second time, Brian lost a musical soulmate of sorts around this time. Brian always made mention of how drummer Cozy Powell really re-energized him after Freddie's death and while he was stepping away from Queen. Brian and Cozy gelled together excellently. When Cozy was killed in a car accident, Brian was devastated. He made a special mix of Business which emphasized Cozy's drums. Brian did soldier on for another tour in 1998 but it would be his last solo tour (until Kerry Ellis) as he felt lost without Cozy to lean on. Unsurprisingly, Brian would start working within the Queen confines again more and more after this year.

RADIO EDIT
ROCK ON COZY EDIT
NO YT VIDS - Both are small edits, of the album version and Cozy version respectively. Not much is lost, a few instrumental bits.

BRIAN LIVE IN BUDAPEST 1998

- Also includes a keyboard solo from Spike.

PERSONAL NOTES: Crank it up, especially while driving in the summer. While it's a bit plodding for a real driving song it definitely is hammering. Very powerful and the lyrics are also meaningful!

Next? Brian stays humorous with the rock ditty about a Geisha girl...China Belle

There's a little lady living down in old Beijing, hey
She got everything you need well you know what I mean
No it ain't what you're thinking she ain't love for sale, no, no
She'll get you jumping just for fun but there's a sting in her tale, yeah
She's a lover she's a fighter she's a red hot bit
You take her as you find her but you never can quit
She's a pretty little lady called China Belle
She's a little bit of heaven and a whole lotta hell

Oh, she gotta bad reputation but you won't say no
You gonna need her sweet loving when you go, go, go
She got a diamond on her finger you can see it glisten
She got plenty conversation, don't talk just listen
She could be flat bed faking but you never can tell
Got the body of an angel but you know darn well
She's a pretty little lady called China Belle
She's a little bit of heaven and a whole lotta hell

Hey, let me tell ya'

I was standing at the station on the neck of Siam
I met a man from Abu Dhabi said 'you know who I am'
They call me hard nosed Harry who could never get hooked
But I fell in love with trouble after just one look
She'll give you dirty loving honey make you feel real swell
But if you say you wanna stay she ain't that kinda girl
I said you're talking 'bout a lady that I know darn well
She's a little bit of heaven and a whole lotta hell

She'll take you Nee-How walking to a Chinese Ball
You'll be singing and a dancing underneath the Great Wall
But when you're strolling in the rain through Tiananmen Square
You turn around and look for China and she ain't nowhere
Ooh, she's a dangerous habit she's a red hot bit
You could get a better rabbit but you just can't quit
She's a pretty little lady called China Belle
She's a pretty little lady called China Belle
She's a pretty little lady called China Belle
She's a little bit of heaven and a
Whole lotta hell, ow

Take me to China
Take me away
She's a little bit of heaven and a whole lotta hell
Hell

- Played through the live 1998 tour
- A humorous lyric that Brian claims is not about a prostitute but perhaps someone not far from!

LIVE IN AUSTRALIA 1998

- Begins with a Spike keyboard solo.

PERSONAL NOTES: I think it's funny as hell. It reminds me of Love Token Great guitar work. And I love that lyric: She's a little bit of heaven and a whole lotta hell!"

Why Don't We Try Again

Written by: Brian May

Musicians:

Brian May - vocals, guitar, keyboards
Cozy Powell - drums, percussion

After the storm there's the dead of night
It seems there's no way back for me
So little comfort in my lonely bed
To know that it had to be, ooh

And now I miss you in so many ways
You know I miss you for so many lonely days
Ahh-ahh, why don't we try again

In the dark there's a desert flower
It blooms where no-one ever sees
Our love was stronger than history
Our love will never cease to be

How can I live with you as a memory
You hold the best part of me, ooh

And now I miss you in so many ways
You know I miss you for so many lonely days
Ahh-ahh, why don't we try again

(Ooh)
(Ooh, oooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)

No use me waiting by the telephone
You're gone, it ain't gonna ring
Oh, oooh
Oh, oooh

And now I miss you in so many ways
You know I miss you for so many
Lonely, lonely days and nights

I know you miss me for so many lonely days
Ahh-ahh, why don't we try again

Ahh-ahh, why don't we try again
Ahh-ahh, why don't we try again
Ahh-ahh, why don't we try again
Ahh-ahh, why don't we try again

- Reportedly initally written for a Queen project but not developed fully until this album
- Was not tried live during the main tour, but was played during the little promotional acoustic tour Brian did.

ALTERNATE VERSIONS:

PROMO EDIT
NO YT VID
- Not necessary. Shaves a minute off and makes it a bit more concise but nothing earth shattering.

LIVE IN 1998

PERSONAL NOTES: Beautiful song. Brian has a very nice falsetto that he didn't use on lead vocal too often. It works really well here and is a very touching song. I would have loved to have heard a Freddie take!

Gonna have it all (ooh, ooh)
It's gonna be fine so fine
Baby all of the time (ooh, ooh)

I'm in control (on my way up)
I'm mighty bold (I'm telling myself)
I'm looking good (I'm totally sussed)
I'm quitting the neighbourhood
On my way up (oh yes I am)
Gotta get right with 'em
Got all of my life left for livin'
Wow, yeah

Nobody gonna tell me no
Nobody gonna stop me so
Everybody gonna see me grow
Nobody gonna hold me down
Gotta get to a better place
Gotta wake up, and see your face
Gotta hold on, move on
Go through that wall

It's my life or it's nothing
Our life or its nothing at all
I'm on my way up
Yeah, gotta come with me, hey, let's go
Hit 'em

I'm on my way

Oh, I'm on my way (on my way up)
Yeah, gonna get it right (I'm telling myself)

Gonna start that livin' babe (on my way up) yeah (up) yeah (up) yeah (up)
Got all my sights set on heaven

Wow, hey, hey
Hey, no stop me now, hey no stop me now, hey no stop me now

- Issued as a single backed with ‘Maybe Baby’ and ‘F.B.I.’ in 1998 in The Netherlands (where it hit #79).
- Recorded in 1994.
- Played throughout the 1998 tour, with a live version included on the Japanese only mini album, Red Special (in this anthology on the solo live b-sides section).

QUOTE:

“The central character of this song is someone who is basically a loser, you know, but he has total belief and a kind of insane optimism, and he’s going somewhere. ‘Man I’m on my way’ and that’s what this song is. And again it became imbued with different things once I got going on the song, so it could be a few other things as well.” – Brian May

ALTERNATE VERSIONS
FRANK STUBBS PROMOTES VERSION

- Again a bunch of short rarities - this one starts around 8:11
- This was the original unused version for series 2 of Frank Stubbs Promotes, a UK TV show.

LIVE 1998

PERSONAL NOTES: This is a fun song. Very southern, countryish stomp. I love the line: "positivism to give 'em!" To me, the female backing vocalists are a bit overpowering but it's still a great tune.

NEXT? Brian gets really heavy again for a video game - heavy metal with guest drummer, Taylor Hawkins (of the Foo Fighters) in Cyborg!

Cyborg

Written by: Brian May

Musicians:
Brian May - vocals, guitar, keyboards
Taylor Hawkins - drums

Welcome to my world
Oh
Fight
Hey
Come and play with me, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha

I'm waiting

I play their fantasy and
I live their pain
My heart and soul locked up in a cold steel frame
A strange creature's crawling
And it's calling out my name
I don't want to
I don't need to
But I must fight again

Let me out
Set me free

Calling out for the Cyborg
Gonna rub you out
Time is up for the Cyborg
You'll never get out
Bah, you're nothing but a Cyborg, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha

Cyborg

Cyborg, it's your time

Oooohh
I'll make it back there baby
Just you watch me try
(One more try, justa one more try)
We'll fly again into the deep blue sky

I feel a hunger baby
Cyborg feels no shame
Lord I have to
Lord I need to
Win this wicked game

Come step to me

Calling out for the Cyborg
Gonna rub you out
Time is up for the Cyborg
You'll never get out
Calling out for the Cyborg
Gonna put your light out
Bah, you're nothing but a Cyborg
You'll never get out

I'm gonna erase your file

- Featuring Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters on drums. Taylor is a HUGE Queen fan. He and Dave Grohl both. Taylor has been quoted many times about the concerts he attended and how the band just rocked his world. Taylor has worked with the band members on many projects and live. He has had his difficulties though and he is to “blame” for a canceled Queen gig. In 2001 Queen was going to do a VH1 Storytellers type show in NY. Brian and Roger had agreed to it and Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins were going to be a big part of it. Taylor then unfortunately overdosed and needed a hospital stay. Between that and 9/11, the gig never materialized. As much as that sucks, Taylor has certainly done more FOR Queen than against so I wish him well. He seems to have cleaned up for the most part and has had a great career!

- This particular song was written for a computer game called Rise Of The Robots. The game was unfortunately not received very well. The soundtrack was though!

- This was not attempted live.

QUOTE:

“Right after I got asked for a song by this "gang", I tried to think myself into the mind of this robot, that’s a very interesting thing to do, because it triggers of something in yourself. At the beginning I wrote the song for the robot, at the end it was a song for me. I began to give the robot my emotions.” - Brian May - Music Scene Magazine – 1998

“’Cyborg’ was a quick job I did for a computer game [Rise of the Robots, though it wasn’t used until the sequel, Rise 2: Resurrection] and it obviously cried out to be a proper guitar thing so I went for it. These days I’m using my fingers to pick more. Because there are a lot of things you can do by plucking the strings in different directions. And it also links into tapping because your right hand isn’t holding a pick, so it’s free to go up on the fret board. I’m not heavily into tapping, but there are certain things you can do where the [div align="right"] finger can also hi a fret and get little transition notes, which can be really nice.” – Brian May

ALTERNATE VERSIONS:

- Note that Taylor did not play on this one.

INSTRUMENTAL

PERSONAL NOTES: For those aching to see Brian/Queen return to some heavier tracks, this is a blessing. A great tapping technique that Brian rarely uses shows he can hack it even if he doesn't usually try. ROCKING track.
